Informal Introduction to Taganrog

Taganrog is located on the coast of Taganrog Bay, a part of the Azov Sea. It is a mideum-size Russian Southern city with a great cultural legacy. The town is approximately 700 miles South-East of Moscow it is very green and the weather is great almost all the time.

Taganrog was founded by Russian tzar Peter the Great in 1698. So, it just celibrated its third centennary.

Old marketplace. Built in 1841 and named after the tzar Alexander who died in Taganrog.

Taganrog Yacht Club was established on August 12, 1908. Some boats there are quite impressive. Taganrog State University owens one of the yachts and orginizes free sails for participants of the exchange program.
Chekhov Theatre. Built in 1866. Was named after Anton Chekhov a Russian novelist who was born in Taganrog. The building is located in the historic downtown district on Petrovskaya Street. City Administration building is across the street from the theatre
Architecture and Design Museum. Constructed in 1912 by a famous Russian architect Shekhtel.
This is the house where on one of the cold winter days of 1860 Anton Chekhov the greatest Russian writer was born. The street where it is located is of course called Chekhov Street.
In this house Chekhov's family lived from 1864 until 1874. They rented the house from a local merchant Moiseev. Chekhov's father owned a "Colonial Goods" store located on the first floor.
Taganrog has its own museum of fine arts. Locals call it "Gallery". Some kind-hearted rich guy donated his personal collection of painings to the city. That's how it was started.
